Impressive Belgian abstract wall sculpture dating from the 1960s, executed in heavily textured steel.
The tall, architectural composition is constructed from an intricate arrangement of welded geometric and free-form elements, creating an almost labyrinthine pattern reminiscent of an abstract invented graphic language. The rough, richly worked surface is particularly characteristic of the experimental metalwork associated with Belgian post-war modernism and Brutalism.
Its openwork construction gives the piece considerable depth. As light moves across it, the sculpture casts strong shadows onto the wall behind, effectively extending the composition beyond the metal itself. Viewed from different angles, overlapping layers and projecting elements become increasingly apparent.
The silver-grey finish emphasises the raw character of the steel and contrasts beautifully with the dark recesses and shadows within the work.
