An extraordinary sculptural fashion piece by Belgian designer and artist Christoph Coppens, created for and presented as part of his final fashion show.
Hand-built from woven natural materials, wicker, textile and long fibres, the work has an imposing, almost ceremonial presence. Its architectural framework is constructed around a series of circular woven forms, intricate spirals and open organic structures, contrasted by cascading lengths of raw natural fibre. Seen from different angles, the piece continually changes character — somewhere between couture, sculpture, costume and ritual object.
The work comes from a particularly significant moment in Coppens’ career. For his farewell fashion presentation, Coppens collaborated with Róisín Murphy, the Irish artist and former singer of Moloko, bringing together his highly imaginative approach to headwear and fashion with Murphy’s distinctive performance presence.
Mounted on its metal display stand, the piece functions beautifully as a freestanding sculptural artwork
in its own right. The scale, craftsmanship and highly unusual construction make it an exceptional object for collectors of contemporary fashion, Belgian design, wearable art and fashion history.
