An impressive large-scale ceramic vase by Schiavon, standing approximately 52cm high. More sculptural object than conventional vase, this highly distinctive piece combines an angular, architectural form with an exuberant hand-decorated design.
The front is alive with abstract and figurative motifs: stylised faces, geometric forms, checkerboard detailing and raised circular elements, all picked out in a rich palette of deep blue, vivid red and orange, ochre yellow, brown and black
against a softly textured off-white ground.
A large circular motif dominates the centre, framing a wonderfully expressive sun-like face. The irregular, almost Cubist-inspired silhouette gives the piece a different appearance from every angle, while the reverse is much quieter, revealing the sculptural modelling of the ceramic with restrained black line decoration.
The combination of hand-drawn lines, glazed colour and three-dimensional applied details gives the vase a wonderfully individual, artistic quality. At 52cm tall, it has genuine visual impact and would work beautifully as a standalone piece on a console, pedestal or large sideboard.
