A wonderfully expressive vintage naïve wooden sculpture, dating from approximately the 1970s/1980s, depicting two closely positioned figures.
Carved with deliberately simplified, elongated features, the sculpture has a strong folk-art / outsider-art character. The two faces lean closely together, giving the work an intimate and slightly mysterious presence. Deeply carved eyes, long angular noses and stylised hair give each figure an individual personality.
The hand-painted surface is particularly attractive, with earthy ochre, brown, grey and muted red tones. Areas of wear, rubbing and irregularity in the painted finish add considerably to its authentic, primitive character and vintage appeal.
Viewed from different angles, the sculpture changes noticeably—the larger figure dominates from one side, while from the front the two figures become an almost inseparable composition.
